STUDENT RESEARCH PROJECT SUBMISSIONS

Research Project

Welcome to the first North Carolina Sea Turtle Symposium (NCSTS). Being this is our first NCSTS, we are only accepting submissions from UNCW students. We hope to open this opportunity to more schools in coming years.

We are looking for presentations which are centric to the North Carolina Coast. You can choose from one of four topics which house multiple categories under each topic. There is a $500 award for first place oral presentation winners, as well as subsequent prizes for second place in oral presentation, and poster presentation winners. Climate Changes of North Carolina Beaches

- Changing Beach and/or Water Temperatures

- Rising Sea Levels

- Beach Erosion

- Cold Stunning of Sea Turtles

Natural History and Biology of North Carolina Sea Turtles

- Latest Research on Sea Turtles in North Carolina

- Sea Turtle Rehabilitation in North Carolina

- Health Issues Facing Sea Turtles in North Carolina

- Latest Information Regarding Genetics of Sea Turtles

Natural and Unnatural Problems that affect North Carolina Beaches

- Beach Restoration/ Renourishments in North Carolina

- Microplastics/ Pollution Effects

- Dredging/ Drilling

- Oil Spills

- Wind Mills

Education

- Needs and impacts of Sea Turtle Education

- In depth research of One Species of Sea Turtle in North Carolina- to include such topics as mating, nesting, foraging, eye sight,  communication between turtles, survival, and/or/ where they are now on the endangered list.

Any other subject pertaining to sea turtles, beaches, waters, coastal areas, and ecosystems of North Carolina that is not listed above, will need to be approved first. Please email your presentation title and brief description to ncstsstudent@gmail.com for approval prior to applying.

Application Fee of $15

After registering, please check your email for a message containing a code for free admission into the Symposium.

After you submit your application?

All submissions will be considered. Submission deadline is December 14th, 2022 at midnight. All submissions will go through a preliminary judging and the top 5 oral and top 5 poster presentations will advance. Notification of advancement will be sent via your UNCW email by December 30, 2022. Those top 5 oral and top 5 poster presentations will then present in person in front of a 5+ person judging panel on Friday, January 13th, 2023 from 4 -8 pm on campus at UNCW. Those top 10 advancing will also be asked to be present in person and to display their Power Point and/or Posters at the symposium on Saturday, January 14th, 2023 from 1-5pm. The first-place winner of the Oral Presentation will also need to present their PP presentation in front of the attendees at the symposium prior to lunch break. Time TBD.
